Second half starts with another game against Railers

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals (19-15-2-0, 40 pts., 3rd North) start the second half of the season with a third straight home game against the Worcester Railers (14-14-3-2, 33 pts., 5th North) Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The Royals have $5 Green Zone tickets and a postgame autograph and player photo session, courtesy of Rieck’s Printing.

Reading has split the first two games against the Railers in this mini-series. The Royals shut out Worcester, 3-0, Sunday led by a 28-save shutout from John Muse. The 29-year-old netminder was named CCM/ECHL Goaltender of the Week (Jan. 1-7) Tuesday and went 3-0-0-0 (3 GA, 1 SO) last week.

Last season, the Royals had 44 points at the halfway mark, tied for second in the North Division. Reading went 6-1-1-0 to start the final half last campaign.

The Royals remain three points behind Adirondack for second in the North Division. Reading matches up against the Thunder for a home-and-home starting at Santander Arena on Fri., Jan. 12 at 7:00 p.m. The Royals will giveaway gym bags to the first 2,000 fans, courtesy of Tower Health.

The Moose
Royals goaltender John Muse has won six straight starts and was awarded ECHL/CCM Goaltender of the Week Tuesday. Friday against Brampton, he denied 42 shots, one short of a career high. To cap his 3-0-0-0 week, Muse denied 14 shots in the second period in a 28-save Worcester blanking on Sunday.

Since returning from Lehigh Valley on Dec. 28, Muse is 5-0-0-0 with a 1.59 goals against average and .955 save percentage. He’s 9-1-0-0 at home this season and 11-3-1-0 overall.

Against the Railers, Muse is 3-1-0-0 and has allowed five goals on 129 shots (.961 save percentage).

Equally impressive, Muse is tied with South Carolina goalie Parker Milner for a netminder-best three assists. Muse and Milner paired together at Boston College in their NCAA days. Muse won two national championships with the Eagles and was named 2012 Kelly Cup Playoffs MVP with Florida.

Three straight
The Royals and Railers play their third consecutive game Wednesday and this is the third and final time Reading squares off against an opponent in three straight. From Nov. 3-5, Reading played at Worcester and went 1-2-0-0. Next, the Royals teed off on Adirondack by defeating the Thunder in three straight games Nov. 21-25.

Reading is 2-0-0-0 in the final game of three-game series.

Last season, the Royals played an opponent in three consecutive contests on five occasions. Reading was 8-5-2-0 in those situations and 3-1-1-0 in the last game off the series.

Still clicking after the holidays
The Royals are 5-2-0-0 since returning from this season’s holiday break. Entering this season, Reading has used the time off to increase the level of play in four of five years. Last season, the squad went 13-3-0-1 after returning from Christmas to boost to 28-14-1-2 and second in the North Division. The run included a five-game win streak. Nick Luukko was a team-best plus-17 from Dec. 26 – Feb. 4.

During 2014-15, the Royals accrued 12 consecutive wins in an 18-4-0-0 stretch after the holidays. The 2013-14 team demolished opponents during a 10-3-0-0 post-Christmas jaunt which included a seven-game winning streak. The season before, Reading fired off five wins in six games after the holidays.

Scouting Worcester
The Railers are in game four of a six-game road trip (2-1-0-0 so far). After Wednesday, Worcester adjourns to Manchester for a pair of games this weekend.

After the road trip ends, Worcester enjoys a season-long 11-game home stand from Jan. 19 – Feb. 10. The Railers will enjoy restful sleep in their own beds for a full month (Jan. 13 – Feb. 13), an unusual perk in the ECHL.  Once the 11-game dream ends, the Railers have a seven-game road trip.

Barry Almeida has 21 points, most on the active roster. Woody Hudson leads the squad with 12 goals. Mitch Gillam is 6-7-0-0 with a 2.62 goals against average and .902 save percentage. Eamon McAdam has played in 20 games, six more than Gillam. The Penn State graduate has an 8-7-3-2 mark with a 2.83 goals against average and .912 save percentage.

Head-to-Head: Series tied, 4-4
Chris McCarthy and Ryan Penny each have four goals against the Railers and are Reading’s top-two scoring threats in the series. Both have recorded goals in the last two games against Worcester. Railers forward Woody Hudson tops the team with four goals in the series, but has yet to record an assist against any opponent this season. Former Royals forwards Barry Almeida (2g, 4 pts.) and TJ Syner (1a) have found the score sheet. Frank DiChiara has three game-winning goals this season and two have been against Reading.

Four of the eight games have been decided by a goal and both teams have two wins.

John Muse has a 3-1-0-0 record against the Railers and shut them out with 28 saves Sunday. Mark Dekanich is 1-3-0-0, but holds a 2.30 goals against average and .918 save percentage. Eamon McAdam (2-2-1-0, 2.78 GAA, .917 save percentage) defeated Reading, 3-2, Jan. 6. Mitch Gillam opened the series with consecutive wins against the Royals (52 saves on 53 shots), but has allowed four goals in four periods since (31 shots, 35 saves).

Quick hitter: Penny and McCarthy
Royals forwards Chris McCarthy and Ryan Penny have each scored in three straight games for the third time in their careers. McCarthy has never had a scoring streak longer than three. Penny needs a goal to match his longest scoring streak ever (4), accomplished last season with the Royals.

Krushelnyski received a short pass from Brian Morgan and unloaded a shot to the far post to provide the lead. Matt Willows (1g, 1a) iced the game with an empty-net tally in the final ten seconds.

The Royals trailed twice before Krushelnyski’s decisive tally. Reading leads the season series, 5-4, against the Railers.

Eamon McAdam lost with 29 saves. Both teams were 0-for-1 on the man up.

Reading Police and Fire take on Allentown squads on Sun., Feb. 18

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals announced Thursday the Battle of the Badges XIII for the FirstStates Cup will take place on Sun., Feb. 18 at 12:30 p.m., with the Reading Police and Fire Department facing the Allentown Police and Fire Department. Immediately following the Battle of the Badges, the Royals host Wheeling at 4:00 p.m. One ticket gains entry into both games and a portion of every ticket sold from the game benefits the Battle of the Badges Scholarship Fund established to help the children of firefighters and police officers. Tickets to the doubleheader are available here, calling 610-898-PUCK (7825) or visiting https://royals.isportstix.com/order/group/Battleofthebadges2018/.

“We are excited to honor and help donate to our local heroes that play a vital role in the Reading and Allentown communities,” said Royals Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Ray Melcher. “The Battle of the Badges game is consistent with our commitment to honor those that make a positive impact. The Royals are a lot more than hockey. As strong as police and fire departments are is how strong their communities are and the same could be said about education. That’s why the Battle of the Badges Scholarship Fund is essential.”

For the second straight year, Reading Police and Fire Departments face off against the Allentown squads. Last season, Reading Police and Fire won a nail-biter, 7-6, in the first edition of “Reading vs. Allentown”.

After the game on Feb. 18, the Royals host Faith and Family Night, a 4 for $44 Family Day (presented by Safe Berks, Berks Packing and Coca-Cola) and a Slapshot t-shirt giveaway to the first 1,000 kids, presented by Bethany Children’s Home.

“We’re all in to support and honor local policemen and firefighters, as they help make Reading and Allentown some of the most-fabulous places to live and work,” Melcher explained.

Why did the game begin?
The BOB Game began in 2006 as a benefit game played in remembrance of fallen Reading Police Officer Michael H. Wise II, who died in the line of duty in June of 2004, and Reading Police Officer Scott A. Wertz who was fatally wounded in the line of duty in August of 2006.  The game also raises funds for the police and fire departments scholarship funds.

Series
Last season, a high-scoring affair went Reading’s way, 7-6, against Allentown in the first-ever meeting between the respective towns’ fire and police departments.

In the historical matchup between the Reading Fire Department and Reading Police Department, Fire won the series 6-4-1.

F Michael Huntebrinker added to 2018 ECHL/CCM All-Star Classic

Replaces F Alex Krushelnyski on Team North roster

Reading, PA – Reading Royals forward Michael Huntebrinker has replaced forward Alex Krushelnyski on the North Division roster for the 2018 CCM/ECHL All-Star Classic, to be hosted by the Indy Fuel on Monday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. ET at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum and telecast in the United States on NHL Network. Additionally, Huntebrinker will participate in the Rapid Fire Shootout Challenge as part of The 2018 Blue Indy/ECHL Skills Competition. Krushelnyski was recalled on loan to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Thursday.

Huntebrinker has 11 goals and 19 points in 30 games this season, the club’s top rookie scorer. The St. Louis, MO native leads the Royals with eight goals since Dec. 1. He was named Reading’s Rookie of the Month in December with eight tallies, 11 points and a plus-eight rating in 14 games.

A Minnesota State graduate, Huntebrinker started his career with the Royals after the 2016-17 NCAA season and had three assists in eight games. He registered his first professional goal and multi-point game (1g, 1a) on Nov. 15 vs. Manchester. On Dec. 30, Huntebrinker recorded his first professional hat trick and tallied four points (3g, 1a) in a 5-3 victory over Adirondack.

While at Minnesota State, Huntebrinker tallied 15 goals and 53 points in 124 games.

The Rapid Fire Shootout Challenge will have five skaters and two goaltenders from each conference. One player will shoot on the opposing conference’s goalie in shootout style with shooters alternating between conferences until all five players have each taken two shots. The goalies will then change and the skill will be repeated. After the end of the two sessions, the goalie with the fewest goals allowed will be the winner. Representing the Eastern Conference will be Adirondack’s Ty Loney, Wheeling’s Cody Wydo, Reading’s Michael Huntebrinker, Jacksonville’s Christopher Dienes and Greenville’s Joe Houk, along with goaltenders Etienne Marcoux of Indy and Martin Ouellette of Florida. The Western Conference will be represented by Matt Robertson of Kansas City, Michael Neal of Indy, David Makowski of Allen, Conner Bleackley of Tulsa and Michael Joly of Colorado along with goaltenders Pat Nagle of Toledo and Shane Starrett of Wichita.

The All-Star Classic features four teams representing each of the League’s divisions. In a format similar to those adapted by the NHL and AHL All-Star Games, the four teams will compete in a 3-on-3 tournament in order to crown a winner.  The two semifinal matches will be played within the Eastern and Western Conferences; with the East Division taking on the South Division and the Central Division facing the Mountain Division. The 2018 CCM/ECHL All-Star Skills Competition will take place after the second semifinal game, with the championship round following immediately at the conclusion of the Skills Competition.

More than 65 players from the ECHL All-Star Game have gone on to play in the National Hockey League, including 51 since 2002 when the lineups began having players who coaches felt were prospects to move up to a higher level.

The rosters were determined in a vote of coaches, team captains, media relations directors, broadcasters and members of the media. Each of the ECHL teams is represented by a player in the 2018 CCM/ECHL All-Star Classic.

Huntebrinker scores, Melcher and Gulati discuss ideas

Saturday’s showdown is the first Royals game since Monday’s CCM/ECHL All-Star Classic. Reading’s Michael Huntebrinker scored a goal in the All-Star showcase, but the North Division lost to the South in a 3-on-3 format.

Sunday’s Royals game is expected to end around 5:30 p.m., more than an hour before kickoff. Meet a bunch of local mascots with Mascot Mania on Slapshot’s Birthday. Plus, it’s $5 Green Zone tickets and a 4 for $44 Family Day, presented by Safe Berks, Berks Packing and Coca-Cola. It’s also a postgame skate after the game, presented by Body Zone.

Post all-star break

Head-to-head matchups
The Royals are 1-2-0-0 in the series and defeated the Beast, 3-2, in the last matchup on Jan. 5. Ryan Penny, Chris McCarthy and Derek Whitmore scored. Whitmore has five goals this season and that strike is his only against a team other than Adirondack. John Muse made 42 saves.
