Wheeling, WV – The Reading Royals scored a pair of power-play goals in the third period to spike the Wheeling Nailers, 4-3, Friday at Wesbanco Arena.

Steven Swavely scored his fifth of the season to even the score at three at 3:15 of the third. Five minutes later, Michael Huntebrinker netted his first game-winning goal with another man-up marker. Reading trailed, 3-2, entering the third. Matt Willows (1g, 1a), Alex Krushelnyski (1g, 1a) and Nick Luukko (2a) led the Royals on the scoresheet.

The Royals are 11-7-1-0 (23 points), one point behind Wheeling and Manchester for first in the North Division.

John Muse made 31 saves for his first road victory of the season. He had 14 denials in the third. Adam Morrison made 24 saves in the loss.

The teams rematch Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in Wheeling. Reading hosts Wheeling Dec. 6.

Box Score

Matt Willows (1g, 1a) seized on a turnover and fired it in from the left slot to give the Royals a 1-0 edge at 2:27 of the first. Wheeling’s Nick Sorkin attempted a breakout from behind his net, but the puck clipped off of Scott Tanski’s stick and went to Willows. The righty pick the top left shelf and wristed it in. Tanski received credit on the helper.

Ten seconds later, Wheeling’s Hunter Fejes scored to tie the game. Cody Wydo one-timed a shot from the left circle to give the Nailers the lead with eight minutes left in the first. Sorkin and Reid Gardiner had the assists. Wydo has 15 goals and 25 points in 27 games against the Royals.

At 3:50 of the second, Reading tied the game on a swaggering deke and goal from Krushelnyski. Picking up steam at the left circle, Krushelnyski came in one-on-one, snuck behind the defense and swooped to the right post for a roofing backhander that beat Morrison. Willows earned his second point and Nick Luukko got the second assist.

On a 4-on-3 power play, Army tried a slapshot from the left circle and it beat Muse to the short post, giving the Nailers a 3-2 edge. The strike came with seven minutes to go in the second.

Swavely’s tap-in goal tied the game and the Royals were 2-for-3 on the power play. Nolan Zajac and Mark Naclerio assisted. Huntebrinker slammed one at the right post for the game-winning strike, helped by Krushelnyski and Luukko. Krushelnyski tossed it from the near boards to the right post.

Team signs D Brad Campagna
Royals play final road game before $5 tickets on Wednesday

Wheeling, WV – The Reading Royals (11-7-1-0, 23 pts., 3rd North) look to sweep the weekend at the division rival Wheeling Nailers (11-6-2-0, 24 pts., T-1st North) Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The Royals also host Wheeling on Wed., Dec. 6 at 7:00 p.m., the third straight game the foes meet. Wednesday’s game features $5 Green Zone tickets at Santander Arena, plus a special postgame autograph session with the players. It’s presented by Rieck’s Printing and tickets are available here.

The Royals have also signed D Brad Campagna to a standard player contract. Read more about Campagna below.

Friday, Reading scored a pair of man-up goals in the third period to surge to a 4-3 victory at Wheeling. Michael Huntebrinker had his first game-winning goal eight minutes into the third. John Muse made 14 saves in the third period.

Royals ink Campagna to contract
Reading had a seventh defenseman join the group Saturday by signing Brad Campagna from Fayetteville in the SPHL. Campgana scored a goal in 14 games and added 40 penalty minutes with Fayetteville this season. The 26-year-old captained SUNY-Potsdam (NCAA DIII) in 2015-16. He will wear #6.

Last season, the native of Monroe, NY had five assists in Fayetteville over 34 games.

Hard to sit ‘em

Michael Huntebrinker has points in consecutive games (1g, 1a) and notched his first game-winning goal in Friday’s win over Wheeling. Huntebrinker has seven points (4g) in 12 games this season.

The rookie sat the first five games of the season as a healthy scratch. Since then, he has missed just three games and suited up in nine consecutive contests.

Huntebrinker has four goals and ten points in 20 career games. The 2017 Minnesota State graduate is a native of Chesterfield, MO.

Last time out

The Royals power play caught fire in the third period, scoring on consecutive man-up chances to blast the Wheeling Nailers, 4-3, Friday at Wesbanco Arena.

Steven Swavely tied the game, 3-3, early in the third. Four minutes later, Michael Huntebrinker deflected a pass from Alex Krushelnyski in at the right post. Reading held on for the final 12 minutes. John Muse had 31 saves.

Matt Willows (1g, 1a) scored the opening goal. Wheeling held a 3-2 lead after two periods.

Alex Krushelnyski recorded a pair of points in his first game since being returned on loan from Lehigh Valley.

Tough to win there

The Nailers have recorded at least 20 wins at WesBanco Arena in four of the last five seasons. ECHL teams play 36 home games a season. The team is 5-1-1-0 at home this season. Wheeling picked up its 500th win at WesBanco Arena on Nov. 22 against Worcester.

Reading has 41 wins in 81 road games against Wheeling.

Flyers Flash

The Philadelphia Flyers (8-10-7, 23 points, 8th Metropolitan) have been off since Tuesday, when the team fell 3-1 to San Jose. Claude Giroux scored his 11th goal of the season, second on the squad to Sean Couturier (14g). Jakub Voracek paces the squad with 30 points and has nine points (3g) in seven games.

After a Saturday showdown with Boston, the Flyers swing to western Canada for three games at Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.

Challenging at WesBanco

The Royals play Wheeling five times at WesBanco Arena this season and look for their second straight “winning” season in West Virginia. Last season, the Royals were 3-1-0-0 in Wheeling, the first time since 2013-14 the club had a winning record. Reading went 5-2-0-0 against the Nailers last season.

Since the start of 2014-15, including playoffs, the Royals are 18-20-0-0 against Wheeling.

All-time vs. Wheeling

Wheeling is Reading’s most-common active opponent. The Royals have 91 wins and the Nailers have 73 victories in the 17-year history (REA: 91-59-14 record).

Two goals in third get Royals a point

Wheeling, WV – Chris McCarthy (1g, 1a) and Mark Naclerio (2g) scored in the third to tie the game at four, but Garrett Meurs scored 2:10 into overtime to secure a 5-4 victory for the Wheeling Nailers Saturday at Wesbanco Arena.

Naclerio and McCarthy tallied 14 seconds apart in the third, tying the game with 8:59 left. Meurs scored on a left-circle shot following a giveaway to the top of the left circle. The first goal from Naclerio came on a left-circle rebound at 10:48 of the third. McCarthy’s shot battled in at the right post after a Nailers player accidentally batted it in.

Reading attempted 43 shots on goal, with 39 saves from Will King (win). Mark Dekanich had the overtime loss with 28 saves. The Royals out-shot the Nailers, 14-6, in the third.

Four Royals had multi-point games. The clubs combined for 54 penalty minutes.

Box Score

Krushelnyski scored for the third straight game and the Royals took a 1-0 lead at 5:33 of the first. Willows caught Krushelnyski in sync on a pass from the left corner to the right post. McCarthy garnered the second helper.

Zach Tolkinen answered nine minutes later for Wheeling on a shot from the center blue line, tying the game, 1-1. Reading’s Matt Wilkins fought Hunter Fejes in the left corner with 42 seconds to go in the first. The physicality continued in the second with 38 combined penalty minutes. Loic Leduc and Wheeling’s Jeff Taylor were each ejected.

The Nailers also potted three goals in the second. With Reading down, 3-1, Royals forward Mark Naclerio trimmed the edge by roofing the puck on a rebound at the left post. He waited for the goaltender King to declare his move and Naclerio beat him with a laser over the shoulder. Leduc and Adam Schmidt received assists.

Wheeling added insurance at 11:55 of the second with a goal from Cam Brown off a rebound at the right slot.

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals have acquired defenseman Nick Neville from the South Carolina Stingrays for forward Matt Salhany, the team announced Tuesday. Neville is a 24-year-old in his second professional season.

“I’m just excited for a new beginning in a new city,” said Neville. “I’m hoping I can make the best of the opportunity given to me in Reading.”

A former blueliner for the University of Denver, Neville played in three games with South Carolina this season. He also skated in ten contests for the SPHL’s Peoria Rivermen (3a) before joining South Carolina on Nov. 22. In 18 games with the Stingrays last season, Neville had two assists.

“I have played with Scott Tanski in South Carolina and Nolan Zajac at Denver so I am looking forward to teaming up with them again,” Neville explained.

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals scored two goals in the first and tied for tops in the North Division with a 2-1 win over the Wheeling Nailers Wednesday at Santander Arena. Reading is 12-7-2-0, tied with Wheeling and Manchester at 26 points.

Nolan Zajac scored three minutes into the first, snapping a five-game scoring drought. Leading scorer Alex Krushelnyski (10 goals) tallied in the final three of the frame to jump Reading ahead by two. The Royals have scored the first goal in 16 games this season, the most of any ECHL team. Reading is 9-0-0-0 when leading after one.

Hunter Fejes recorded the Nailers’ lone tally in the second.

Mark Dekanich (win) denied 26 shots and stopped all eight in the third. Adam Morrison lost with 29 denials.

Reading is on the road this Friday in Adirondack and Saturday at Manchester.

Box Score

Zajac potted the opening goal in front of the net at 4-on-4 just 2:16 into the game. Ryan Penny swooped to the bottom of the left circle and tossed it to net front. Zajac darted five feet from the cage and slammed it home. He has five goals this season.

Krushelnyski struck next on the power play with 3:33 left in the first. Chris McCarthy shot it off the right post and a generous rebound found Krushelnyski all alone. He has points in three straight games (3g, 2a) since returning on loan from Lehigh Valley. Reading was 1-for-6 on the power play and denied all three Nailers chances.

The Royals outshot Wheeling, 15-5, in the second but yielded the frame’s only goal. Fejes sniped a shot from the deep slot at 4:16 of the frame.

Reading hosts the Nailers again on Sat., Dec. 16 with the annual Teddy Bear Toss game and Ugly Sweater Jerseys. Plus, the first 2,000 fans receive a Royals Christmas ornament, presented by Met-Ed.

First-place Royals look for sixth straight win against Thunder

Glens Falls, NY – The Reading Royals (12-7-2-0, 26 pts) are in a three-way tie for first place in the North Division and look to stay ahead of the Adirondack Thunder (11-8-1-1, 24 pts., 4th North) Friday at 7:00 p.m. from the Cool Insuring Arena. Reading is 5-0-0-0 against Adirondack this season.

The Royals jumped into first with a 2-1 win over the Wheeling Nailers Wednesday in Reading. Alex Krushelnyski scored his team-leading 10th of the season and Nolan Zajac potted the other goal. Mark Dekanich was perfect over the final half of the game, finishing with 26 saves. The Royals scored the first two goals.

During the five-game dominance against Adirondack, the Royals are outscoring the Thunder, 25-13. The Royals are 4-0-0-0 at home vs. Adirondack and won the only road game, 4-3, on Nov. 25.

Reading plays the next two games on the road and takes on Manchester at 6:00 p.m. After this weekend, the Royals have seven of the next eight at home.

The next Royals home game is Fri., Dec. 15 at 7:00 p.m. against Wheeling. It’s a big night on Sat., Dec. 16 for the annual Teddy Bear Toss game and Ugly Sweater Jerseys against Wheeling at 7:00 p.m. Plus, the first 2,000 fans receive a Royals Christmas ornament, presented by Met-Ed.

McCarthy finds groove
Royals forward Chris McCarthy has points in three of four games (3g, 2a), boosting to third on the team with seven goals. Prior to the uptick, McCarthy had one point in his previous 11 contests.

McCarthy’s efforts included a tying goal against Wheeling in the last half of the third period Sat., Dec. 2 that helped the Royals force overtime. He has helped Reading force overtime with tying third-period goals twice this season; against Toledo Oct. 26, he scored consecutive late-game markers and the Royals bested the Walleye in overtime.

A fourth-year forward from Collegeville, PA, McCarthy is in his second season with the Flyers organization. He had 19 goals and 47 points last season with Reading.

First goals

The Royals have played 21 games and scored the first goal in 16 of them, tied with Colorado for most in the ECHL. When scoring first, the Royals are 11-3-2-0. Despite a few bumps, two of the regulation losses came against teams outside the North Division, South Carolina and Cincinnati.

Nine players have scored a “first goal” and five players have multiple opening markers. Matt Willows and Alex Krushelnyski each have three opening goals to lead the Royals.

Last season, the Royals were sixth by scoring first in 40 games (30-8-2-0 record). During 2015-16, the Royals scored the first goal 41 times, fourth-best in the league (Missouri 47 | South Carolina 43 | Kalamzoo 43).

Scouting Adirondack

The Thunder have won back-to-back games, defeating Worcester in OT and Brampton in a shootout last weekend. Ty Loney potted the overtime-winning goal against the Railers and Ben Murphy defeated the Beast with a ninth-round shootout marker.

Adirondack has had numerous roster moves since the last meeting, with a host of players going up to the AHL. Shane Conacher (18 points) returned from the Syracuse Crunch Thursday. Pierre Luc-Mercier is third on the team with 16 points.

Brian Ward was returned Dec. 5 after spending time with Utica (AHL). He has 11 points (5g) in 17 games with the Thunder.

Between the pipes, Nick Riopel (14 GP) has played the majority of games compared to Drew Fielding (5 GP). Riopel is 7-6-1-0 with a 3.57 goals against average and .857 save percentage. Against teams other than the Royals, Adirondack boasts an 11-4-0-1 record.

Glens Falls, NY – The Reading Royals (13-7-2-0, 28 points) stunned the Adirondack Thunder with three goals in the first period and stayed at first place in the North Division with a 5-1 victory Friday at Cool Insuring Arena. Mark Dekanich made a season-high 47 saves and had 21 stops in the second period.

Nolan Zajac, Derek Whitmore and Matt Wilkins scored in the first. The Royals are 6-0-0-0 against the Thunder this season, their best start in the head-to-head series ever. Reading has outscored Adirondack, 28-13, in the series.

Nic Riopel was pulled after the first, making eight saves. Drew Fielding allowed one goal in relief (18 saves).

After piling on the goals, the Royals left it to Dekanich to anchor. He made 16 saves in the first and then added the season-best 21 in the second.  Through two periods, he matched his previous season high with 37 denials. The 10th-year pro came three saves shy of a career high.

Reading is at Manchester Saturday for a 6 p.m. puck drop. The teams are tied atop the North Division with 28 points.

Box Score

Zajac and Whitmore scored 1:20 apart to place the Royals ahead, 2-0. Zajac scored the Royals’ first short-handed goal of the season by head faking, cutting to the slot and sliding it through Riopel at 6:59 of the first. Adam Schmidt and Wilkins assisted. Next, Whitmore scored in his first game back from injury. After receiving a 140-foot pass from Ryan Penny, Whitmore was all alone and lifted one over Riopel’s right shoulder. The Captain had missed the last 12 games due to the injury.

Wilkins extended the lead with 2:29 remaining in the frame. Chris McCarthy and Matt Willows played catch at the right circle, allowing Wilkins to sneak undisturbed to the left post. Willows passed to him and Wilkins deked and shot it through. Dekanich made 16 saves in the first.

Adirondack outshot the Royals, 21-10, in the second. They had 17 shots in the opening ten minutes of the second.

Mark Naclerio slammed home a goal at the slot for his tenth of the season at :39 of the third, assisted by Alex Krushelnyski. The Royals allowed a short-handed goal 3:12 into the third to James Henry, cutting the edge to 4-1.

Michael Huntebrinker added an empty-net marker with 1.4 seconds left.

Reading’s man up was 0-for-4. The Royals were 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. Both teams netted short-handed markers.

Cap is back
Derek Whitmore scored the game-winning goal in his first game back from injury Friday against Adirondack. He scored on a breakaway, sprung by a perfect 140-foot pass from Ryan Penny. Scouting Manchester
The Monarchs made a host of roster moves to prepare for the weekend. Ahead of Friday’s game vs. Norfolk, G Branden Komm, D Alexx Privatera, F Matt Buckles and F Mikkel Aagaard were all added. Buckles and Aagaard both scored in a 5-2 win Friday.
